Monthly pic April 2012

Squirrel attending its breakfast. Canon 50D, Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM, 1/125, f/5.6, iso 640, tripod.
Photographing mammals is always fun, but most of the 77 mammal species currently occurring in the Netherlands life secretive lives, are pretty nervous and hard to approach or even worse... nocturnal :) The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) however is a more common sight, even though they are as fast as they are cute.

The squirrel I photographed here was especially easy to picture, since I could use the set-up of fellow nature photographer Edwin Kats. Edwin made for a very hospitable morning in his hide, and despite the clouds I got some good photo opportunities.

Despite enjoying my own photo projects and spending many a hour alone in my hide, it is nice to make use of photo set-ups and the experience of other photographers once in a while. Great for the photographer who is short on time, to get to see a species that is otherwise more problematic to view or just for sharing some stories and experiences.
